The mean of 1, 7, 5, 3, 4 and 4 is m. The numbers 3, 2, 4, 2, 3, 3 and p have mean m – 1 and median q. Find p and q.
Solution
Mean of 1, 7, 5, 3, 4 and 4 = `24/6` = 4
`=>` m = 4
Now, mean of 3, 2, 4, 2, 3, 3 and p = m – 1 = 4 – 1 = 3
Therefore, 17 + p = 3 × n ...... Where n = 7
17 + p = 21
p = 4
Arranging in ascending order:
2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4
Mean = 4th term = 3
Therefore, q = 3
