Question

The sum of the radii of two circles is 140 cm and the difference of their circumferences in 88 cm. Find the diameters of the circles.

Solution

Let radius of circles be ๐‘Ÿ1๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘Ÿ2

Given sum of radius = 140cm

๐‘Ÿ1 + ๐‘Ÿ2 = 140 โ€ฆ..(i)

difference in circumferences = 88 ๐‘๐‘š

2 ร— ๐‘Ÿ1 โˆ’ 2๐œ‹๐‘Ÿ2 = 88

2ร— 227(r1โˆ’r2)88

r1-r2=88ร—72ร—22=14

r1=r2+14โ€ฆ.(ii)

(๐‘–๐‘–)๐‘–๐‘› (๐‘–) โ‡’ r1+r2+14=140

โ‡’ 2๐‘Ÿ2 = 126

โ‡’ ๐‘Ÿ2 = 1262 = 63๐‘๐‘š๐‘

๐‘Ÿ2 = 63๐‘๐‘š๐‘  ๐‘–๐‘› (๐‘–๐‘–) ๐‘Ÿ1 = 63 + 14 = 77 ๐‘๐‘š๐‘

Diameter of circle (i) = 2๐‘Ÿ1 = 2 ร— 77 = 154 ๐‘๐‘š๐‘

Diameter of circle (ii) = 2๐‘Ÿ2 = 2 ร— 63 = 126 ๐‘๐‘š๐‘
