Introduction:

Disaster management means taking preventive steps, making plans, and building the ability to face disasters. It helps in reducing the damage caused by both natural and man-made disasters.

  • Disaster management involves planning and preparing for disasters before they happen.
  • It also includes responding to disasters quickly and effectively to protect lives and property.
  • Community participation is important in disaster management because when people work together, they can face disasters better.

Importance:

Disaster management is action implemented through proper planning, organised activity, and coordination. It includes the following:

  1. Prevention of losses and danger.
  2. Improving tolerance.
  3. Providing relief from disaster, minimising the intensity and extent of harm.
  4. Preparation to face the disaster.
  5. Immediate action in the disaster situation.
  6. Assessment of damages and intensity of the disaster.
  7. Arranging for rescue work and help.
  8. Rehabilitation and rebuilding.

Disasters like floods, earthquakes, fires, and storms can cause extensive damage to people’s lives, homes, and cities. Emergency planning helps reduce the impact of these disasters by preparing ahead of time. Disaster management helps in rescue efforts, provides medical help, and ensures that people get food, water, and shelter after a disaster.

Institutes at work: In 2005, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was created in India. NDMA works on planning and implementing disaster management programs across the country. They help create safety plans and emergency response strategies and spread awareness about disasters.
