Question

Find `dy/dx if y = x^2 + 1/x^2`

Sum

Solution

`y = x^2 + 1/x^2`

∴ y = x2 + x–2
Differentiating w.r.t. x, we get

`dy/dx=d/dx(x^2+x^(-2))`

= `d/dx(x^2)+d/dx(x^-2)`

= 2x – 2x3

= `2x  – 2/x^3`
