Missions to Other Planets

Over the past several decades, major space agencies like NASA (USA), ESA (Europe), Roscosmos (Russia), ISRO (India), CNSA (China), and JAXA (Japan) have launched many missions to explore planets and other objects in our solar system. These missions help scientists understand how planets, moons, asteroids, and comets formed and evolved.

Types of Missions:

  • Flyby Missions: Spacecraft pass by planets or objects, taking pictures and collecting data. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 flew past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
  • Orbiter Missions: Spacecraft go into orbit around a planet to observe it over time. Examples: Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Venus Express.
  • Lander and Rover Missions: Landers stay in one spot; rovers move around. Missions like Viking, InSight, Curiosity, and Perseverance have explored the surface of Mars.
  • Sample Return Missions: These missions bring back material from space. Hayabusa, Hayabusa2, and OSIRIS-REx returned samples from asteroids for study on Earth.

Significance:

  1. Reveal how planets and moons formed.
  2. Show changes in planetary environments.
  3. Provide clues about early solar system materials.
  4. Help us understand Earth better through comparison.
