Introduction of Neutralization:

Neutralization is a chemical reaction where an acid and a base (or alkali) come together to form water and a salt. During this reaction, the hydrogen ions (H⁺) from the acid combine with the hydroxide ions (OH⁻) from the base to produce water. The result is usually a solution with a neutral pH of around 7. However, the pH can vary depending on how strong or weak the acid and base are. If a strong acid reacts with a weak base, the pH will be lower than 7 (more acidic). On the other hand, if a strong base reacts with a weak acid, the pH will be higher than 7 (more basic).

Neutralization reaction,

The neutralization process in the reaction form can be expressed as the following:

Acid  +  Base  →  Salt  +  Water

For example,

  • HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
  • 2HNO₃ + Ba(OH)₂ → Ba(NO₃)₂ + 2H₂O
  • H₂CO₃ + 2KOH → K₂CO₃ + 2H₂O
  • 2H₃PO₄ + 3Ca(OH)₂ → Ca(PO₄)₂ + 6H₂O
  • 3HNO₃ + Fe(OH)₃ → Fe(NO₃)₃ + 3H₂O

The net ionic equation example can demonstrate a weak acid and weak base reaction:

H⁺(aq) + NH₃(aq) ⇋ NH₄⁺(aq)

Application of Neutralization:

  1. Neutralization is used in wastewater treatment to reduce damage from harmful effluent.
  2. Antacid tablets, containing bases like aluminium hydroxide, neutralise excess stomach acid to relieve discomfort.
  3. Neutralization helps in chemical titration to determine unknown concentrations of acids or bases.
  4. Applying baking soda to a bee sting neutralizes the acid in the venom, reducing pain and itching.
  5. Vinegar is used on a wasp sting because it neutralizes the basic venom, minimising discomfort.
  6. Soil pH is managed using neutralization; bases like calcium carbonate are added to balance overly acidic soil.
  7. In the rubber industry, ammonia (NH₄OH) prevents latex coagulation by neutralizing lactic acid.
