Deodorant and its Types:

Body odour is caused by the bacterial breakdown of sweat, and deodorants are used to prevent this unpleasant smell. Deodorants, which often have a pleasant fragrance, help people feel fresh throughout the day. They are particularly popular among adolescents, driven by extensive advertising on television. Deodorants typically contain substances like parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, benzyl, and butyl) and a high proportion of alcohol. Aluminium compounds and silica are also common ingredients used in their formulation.

Types of Deodorants:

  1. Ordinary Deodorant: Contains a smaller amount of aluminium. It masks sweat odour without significantly reducing sweating.
  2. Antiperspirant Deodorant: Reduces sweating by clogging sweat pores. It contains about 15% aluminium chlorohydrate and is effective for controlling moisture and odour.
  3. Clinical Deodorant: Designed for individuals who sweat excessively. It contains 20–25% aluminium and is used at night for better absorption and to manage severe sweating issues.

Harmful Effects:

  1. Aluminium-zirconium compounds in deodorants can lead to health issues such as headaches, asthma, and respiratory problems.
  2. Prolonged exposure to these compounds may increase the risk of heart disease without noticeable symptoms.
  3. Aluminium chlorohydrates in deodorants can cause skin irritation and various skin disorders.
  4. There is a potential link between aluminium chlorohydrates and skin cancer with long-term use.
  5. Sensitive individuals may experience allergic reactions or rashes from these chemicals.
  6. Regular use of such products without moderation can have cumulative harmful effects on overall health.
