Notes

Lactation:

  • The female mammary glands initiate lactation at the end of pregnancy, producing milk through the hormone prolactin.
  • This process helps the mother in feeding the newborn baby. The fluid secreted by the mammary glands soon after child birth is called colostrum.
  • Colostrum, a sticky, yellow fluid secreted by mammary glands after childbirth, contains proteins, lactose, and antibodies like IgA.
  • Its low fat content aids in developing resistance in newborn babies during a period when their immune response is not fully developed.
