Cell wall:

The cell wall lies outside the plasma membrane. Found in algae, fungi, and plant cells; not present in animal cells.

  • It acts as a strong and flexible layer surrounding the cell membrane.
  • Made mostly of carbohydrates like cellulose and pectin.
  • It can include additional substances like lignin, suberin, and cutin for extra strength.
  • Provides support and protection.
  • Prevents excess water from entering the cell.
  • Provides structural strength to plants. It helps plant cells to withstand much greater changes in the surrounding medium.
