Pollution:

Pollution occurs when harmful or dirty substances, like garbage, chemicals, smoke, or noise, get into the environment and make it unclean or dangerous. Pollution affects the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land we live on and can harm animals, plants, and even people. It happens when things like factories, vehicles, or waste damage nature by releasing harmful substances. Pollution makes it harder for all living things to stay healthy and can cause problems for the environment.

  • Pollutants are substances that harm the environment, affecting both living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components. They make the surroundings toxic and unhealthy. Pollutants can be natural or man-made.
  • Natural pollutants break down and disappear over time through natural processes, but man-made pollutants are often difficult to eliminate and can persist in the environment for a long time.

Types of Pollution:

Type of Pollution Description Causes Effects
Air Pollution Harmful gases, smoke, and dust are released into the air. Factories, vehicles (cars, buses), burning garbage, and smoke from cooking. Breathing is hard, and health problems like asthma harm animals and plants.
Water Pollution Harmful substances like chemicals, garbage, or dirty water are dumped into water bodies. Factories release waste into rivers, garbage in water bodies, and oil spills from ships. Polluted water is dangerous to drink and harms fish, plants, and animals.
Land Pollution (Soil Pollution) Garbage, plastic, and harmful chemicals are dumped on the ground. Careless waste disposal, overuse of chemical pesticides, deforestation. It makes it hard to grow plants and harms animals living in the soil.
Noise Pollution Loud sounds that disturb people and animals. Traffic, loudspeakers, construction work, fireworks. It causes stress, headaches, and hearing problems and disturbs animals and birds.
