Force

A stationary object on which no force is acting remains stationary. An object in motion continues to move with the same speed and direction when no force is acting on the object. This is Newton’s first law of motion. An object experiences force when it interacts with another object. It is also the energy associated with movement or physical action. According to the universal law of gravitation, every object in the universe exerts a force on every other object. Force is required to move an object.

Characteristics of Force:

  • SI Unit: Newton (N) or kgm/s²
  • Symbol: F
  • Type of Quantity: Vector
  • Dimensional Formula: M¹L¹T⁻²
  • Other Units: Dyne, pound-force, kilopond, poundal, kip

Various actions

For example, if a smaller mass m is placed on a larger mass M, both bodies exert forces on each other. This interaction demonstrates that force is always present when two or more objects interact.
