Topics

Rayon:

  • Rayon is made from natural materials like cotton and wood pulp. Wood pulp comes from trees, and it's what paper is made from too!
  • These materials (cotton and wood pulp) are dissolved in a special chemical called sodium hydroxide. This mixture turns into a thick liquid, almost like a very smooth paste.
  • Machines are used to turn this thick liquid into thin threads. This process is a bit like how spaghetti is made from dough in a pasta maker.
  • The threads that come out are very shiny and strong, much like silk, which is a luxurious and shiny material made by silkworms. But since rayon is made by people using machines and chemicals, we call it synthetic silk.
  • The threads are so shiny that they remind people of the bright rays of the sun. That's why this material is called Rayon, which sounds like "rays" from the sun.

Uses of Rayon:

Rayon is used in many things because of its beauty and strength. For example, clothes, curtains, and even some types of furniture covers.
