Biological Fixation of Nitrogen:

Biological nitrogen fixation is a process where certain microorganisms convert nitrogen from the air into a form that plants can use, such as nitrates. There are two main types of microorganisms that do this:

  1. Rhizobium microorganisms: These live in the root nodules of leguminous plants, like peas and beans. They take nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into nitrates, which are useful for plants. In return, the plant provides the rhizobium with food and a place to live.
  2. Azotobacter microorganisms: These live freely in the soil. Like rhizobium, they also convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, helping enrich the soil for plants.
