Characteristic Animals Plants
Grow Animals grow from babies to adults. Plants grow from seeds into mature plants.
Need Food Animals eat food for energy. Plants make their own food using sunlight (photosynthesis).
Move Animals move to find food, shelter, or escape danger. Plants don't move, but their parts (leaves, flowers) can move towards sunlight.
Breathe Animals breathe in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
Reproduce Animals give birth to babies or lay eggs. Plants reproduce from seeds.
Respond to Surroundings Animals react quickly to danger or changes (e.g., running away). Plants turn leaves towards sunlight or grow roots towards water.
Excrete Animals remove waste by excreting or sweating. Plants release excess water through leaves (transpiration).
Have a Lifespan Animals have a certain lifespan and eventually die. Plants also live for a certain time and die.
