Introduction:

Floods are a common natural disaster that happens all over the world. A flood occurs when there is too much rain in a short period, causing water to overflow onto land that is usually dry.

Causes of Flood:

  • Excessive Rainfall: When there is heavy rainfall in the same place for a long time, rivers cannot hold all the water. The water overflows the riverbanks and spreads to nearby areas, causing a flood.
  • Poor Drainage in Cities: In big cities, the drainage system sometimes cannot handle heavy rain. This causes gutters and drainage lines to get clogged, which leads to water overflowing onto roads and entering houses.

Effects of Floods:

  1. Loss of life
  2. Damage to property
  3. Soil erosion
  4. Destruction of crops
  5. Water contamination
  6. Spread of diseases
  7. Displacement of people
  8. Economic loss

Prevention of Floods:

  1. Construction of small dams in mountainous regions
  2. Construction of percolation tanks
  3. Making river beds flat
  4. Cultivation of new forests
  5. Connecting rivers
  6. Rainwater Harvesting
