Introduction:

When gases are heated, their particles move faster and spread further apart, causing the gas to expand. On the other hand, when gases cool down, the particles move slower and come closer together, resulting in contraction. This behaviour can be observed in hot air balloons, where heated air expands and makes the balloon rise. Similarly, gases contract in cold temperatures, taking up less space.

Experiment

1. Aim: To observe how gases expand when heated and contract when cooled.

2. Requirements: glass bottle, balloon, hot water, and container (to hold water).

3. Procedure

  • Fix a balloon tightly over the mouth of a glass bottle.
  • Place the bottle in hot water.
  • Observe the balloon-it starts to inflate slightly.
  • Now, remove the bottle from the hot water and let it cool.
  • Observe how the balloon deflates as the gas inside contracts.

4. Conclusion: Gases expand when heated, causing the balloon to inflate. Gases contract when cooled, causing the balloon to deflate. This shows that the volume of gas changes with temperature- increases on heating and decreases on cooling.
