To understand why handspans are not reliable for accurate measurement
- One student measures and cuts a string using four handspans.
- Other students repeat the process, measuring and cutting their own four-handspan-long string.
- Compare all the strings by holding them together at one end.
- The lengths of the strings will be different because each student’s handspan varies.
- This shows that handspans are not a reliable or accurate method of measurement, as they differ from person to person.
