Fundamental Quantities:

Fundamental Quantities: These are basic physical quantities like length, mass, and time. To measure these accurately, we need to use standard units that everyone can follow. These units should be fixed and available for everyone to use.

Standards of Fundamental Quantities:

  1. Mass: The standard for mass is a solid cylinder made of platinum-iridium alloy, which is kept in Paris. This mass is called one kilogram (kg). Copies of this standard are kept in different labs around the world.
  2. Length: The standard for length is a platinum-iridium bar with two engraved lines. The distance between these two lines is called one meter (m). Copies of this bar are kept in laboratories worldwide to ensure accurate measurement.
  3. Time: Time is measured based on the Earth’s rotation. One complete revolution of the Earth is taken as 24 hours. One second is standardised by dividing 1 hour into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds.
