Notes

Division of Rational Number:

To divide one rational number by the other non-zero rational number, we multiply the rational number by the reciprocal of the other. Thus,

1) `(-7)/2 ÷ 4/3`

= `(-7)/2 xx ("reciprocal of" 4/3)`

= `-7/2 xx 3/4`

= `(-21)/8`.

2) `(-6)/5 ÷ (- 2)/3`

= `6/(-5) xx "reciprocal of" (-2/3)`

= `6/(-5) xx 3/(-2)`

= `18/10`.

Product of reciprocals:

The product of a rational number with its reciprocal is always 1.

For example,

= `-4/9 xx ("reciprocal of"-4/9)`

= `(-4)/9 xx (-9)/4`

= 1

Similarly, `(-6)/13 xx (-13)/6 = 1`.
