Definition

Positive Rational Number: When the numerator and denominator, both, are positive integers, it is a positive rational number. `3/8, 5/7, 2/9` etc. are positive rational numbers.

Negative rational numbers: When either the numerator or the denominator is a negative integer, it is a negative rational number. `-5/7, -3/8, -9/5` etc. are negative rational numbers.

Notes

Positive and Negative Rational Numbers:

Rational numbers are classified as Positive and Negative rational numbers.

1. Positive Rational Number:

  • When the numerator and denominator, both, are positive integers, it is a positive rational number.
  • `3/8, 5/7, 2/9` etc. are examples of positive rational numbers.

2. Negative rational numbers:

  • When either the numerator or the denominator is a negative integer, it is a negative rational number.
  • `-5/7, -3/8, -9/5` etc. are negative rational numbers.

3. Facts about Positive and Negative Rational Numbers:

  1. When the numerator and denominator, both, are positive integers, it is a positive rational number. For example, `2/3`.

  2. When the numerator and denominator, both, are negative integers, it is a positive rational number. For example `(-8)/(-3)`.

  3. If the numerator is negative and their denominator is positive, it is a negative rational number. For example, `(-5)/3`.

  4. If the numerator is positive and their denominator is negative, it is a negative rational number. For example, `5/(-7)`.

  5. The number 0 is neither a positive nor a negative rational number.
