Insectivorous plants:

Insectivorous plants are special plants that feed on insects to get nutrients. These plants usually grow in places where the soil or water lacks important nutrients, especially nitrogen, which is why they trap and digest insects to survive.

  • One example of an insectivorous plant is Drosera burmanii. This plant has a unique flower-like appearance and grows close to the ground. Its leaves are brightly coloured, usually pink or red, and have tiny hairs on the edges.
  • At the tips of these hairs, the plant produces sticky droplets. These droplets attract insects because they look like water or nectar.
  • When an insect lands on the leaf, it gets stuck in the sticky substance, and the plant slowly digests it to absorb nutrients.

The plant was first identified by the scientist Johannes Burman in Sri Lanka in 1737, which is why it's named after him.
