Remedial and Preventive Measures for Disasters:
It’s important to know what to do before or during a natural or man-made disaster to stay safe. Here are some simple precautions that everyone can take to reduce damage and protect themselves during such emergencies:
- Stay Informed: Always watch TV and radio news for updates and important information about any possible disaster. If there is no electricity, use battery-operated radios and mobiles to stay informed.
- Follow Warnings: The Meteorological Department issues warnings for things like heavy rains, floods, or storms. Listen to these warnings carefully and follow any instructions they give.
- Precautions for Landslides: Landslides can occur in hilly areas after heavy rains or thunderstorms. Do not take shelter at the foot of a hill during such times, as landslides can cause rocks and mud to fall, which is dangerous.
- Precautions for Floods: During floods, avoid staying in houses or areas near riverbanks, as these areas can get flooded quickly. Move to higher ground or safer areas unaffected by the flooding. Do not step into fast-moving water or try to drive through it, as the water can sweep you away.
- Precautions for Earthquakes: Earthquakes can cause roads to split open, railway tracks to get damaged, and the ground to crack. If you need to move from one place to another, make sure the roads are safe before travelling.
- Take Shelter in Relief Camps: Relief camps are set up after a disaster to provide a safe place for people. In relief camps, you can get food, water, medicines, and first aid. If your home is unsafe, go to a relief camp for help.
- Fire Safety: Fires can be dangerous during disasters. To protect yourself from fire, make sure there are fire extinguishers available in public places like schools, hospitals, and railway stations. Learning how to use a fire extinguisher can help save lives during a fire.
