Mineral oil:

Mineral oil, also called petroleum or crude oil, is a fuel formed from the remains of dead sea organisms buried millions of years ago. These remains were covered by layers of soil and sand. Over time, high pressure and heat changed them into mineral oil.

  • Mineral oil is found deep underground, mainly in oil sands, shale, sandstone, and limestone, at depths between 1000 to 3000 meters. It is extracted through oil wells and has a greenish-brown colour.
  • Petroleum is a mixture of hydrocarbons, along with small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur. It is refined using fractional distillation to separate it into different products, such as:
  • Aviation petrol (for planes), gasoline (petrol for cars), diesel, kerosene, naphtha, lubricating oil, tar, etc. These products are used as fuel and also to make dyes, pesticides, perfumes, and artificial fibres.
