Introduction:

1. Balanced Forces

  • When equal amounts of forces are applied to an object from different directions such that they cancel each other out.
  • They do not change the state of rest or motion of an object. They may change the shape and size of an object.

2. Unbalanced Force

  • When forces applied to an object are of different magnitudes (or not in opposite directions so as to cancel).
  • They can alter the state of rest or motion of an object, cause acceleration, and alter the shape and size of the object.

Experiment

1. Aim: To show the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object.

2. Requirements: A cardboard box, two thick strings, a smooth table, two weighing pans, and equal and unequal masses.

3. Procedure

  • Place a cardboard box on a smooth table and tie thick strings to both sides.
  • Attach weighing pans to each string and hang them on either side of the table.
  • Add equal masses to both pans. The box stays still, showing balanced forces.
  • Add more mass to one pan. The box moves toward the heavier side, demonstrating unbalanced forces.

4. Conclusion

  • Balanced forces: When equal forces are applied in opposite directions, the box remains stationary because the forces cancel each other out.
  • Unbalanced Forces: When the forces are unequal, the box moves towards the side with the greater force, showing that unbalanced forces cause an object to move.
