Pollution- Prevention and Control:
The Indian government has taken several steps to control and prevent pollution by enacting specific laws. These laws are designed to address different types of pollution and ensure a cleaner environment.
Following are laws regarding pollution control:
- Water Pollution and Prevention Act, 1974: This law aims to stop water pollution by regulating industries and individuals to prevent harmful substances from contaminating water. It also requires setting up treatment plants to clean industrial waste before it is released into rivers or lakes.
- Air Pollution and Prevention Act, 1981: This act controls air pollution by limiting emissions from vehicles and factories. It encourages reducing harmful gases and promotes the use of cleaner technologies to protect air quality.
- Environmental Protection Act, 1986: This law provides a comprehensive framework for protecting the environment, covering air, water, and soil pollution. It gives the government power to enforce strict rules, manage waste, and take action against environmental harm.
Additional Rules and Regulations:
The government has introduced various laws and guidelines for managing different types of waste and pollution, such as:
- Biomedical Waste Management: Rules for safely disposing of medical waste to avoid health hazards.
- Effluent Regulations: Rules for treating and managing harmful liquid waste from industries.
- Solid Waste Management: Guidelines for reducing and properly disposing of garbage and other solid waste.
- Noise Pollution Control: Measures to limit noise pollution from vehicles, factories, and public events.
Monitoring and Supervision:
Government bodies are responsible for ensuring that these pollution control laws are followed:
- Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB): This regional body oversees pollution control in the state of Maharashtra. It checks if factories and local organisations are complying with pollution laws.
- Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB): This national body supervises pollution control across the entire country. It works with local authorities to monitor pollution levels and ensure that laws are enforced.
