Powder Coating:

Powder coating is a process used to apply a protective and durable finish to surfaces, particularly metal, to prevent rust and wear. Unlike traditional liquid paint, which uses solvents, powder coating involves a dry powder made from a mix of polymer resin, pigments, and other ingredients. This powder is first melted, cooled, and ground into a fine, uniform consistency.

  • The application process uses electrostatic spray deposition (ESD), where the powder particles are electrically charged and sprayed onto a polished surface.
  • The charged particles stick evenly to the object due to their static attraction. Once coated, the object is heated in an oven, which triggers a chemical reaction in the powder. This reaction forms strong, interlinked polymer chains, creating a hard, smooth, and long-lasting finish.
  • While traditionally used on metals, advancements in technology now allow powder coating to be applied to materials like plastics and medium-density fibreboard (MDF).
  • This has been made possible by innovations such as UV-curable powders, which require minimal heat or time in the oven. The result is a durable, attractive finish that is ideal for both industrial and everyday items.
