Introduction of Sonography and its Working:

Sonography, also known as ultrasound imaging, is a medical technique that uses ultrasonic sound waves to create images of internal organs in the human body. It is a non-invasive, painless, and safe diagnostic method widely used in medical practice. Sonography helps doctors diagnose conditions such as swelling, infections, and pain, and it is also extensively used to monitor the development of a foetus during pregnancy.

Working:

  • High-frequency sound waves are transmitted into the body using a device called a probe.
  • These sound waves travel through the body and reflect off internal organs.
  • A special gel is applied to the skin over the area to be examined.
  • The gel ensures proper contact between the probe and the skin, allowing the ultrasound waves to penetrate effectively without interference.
  • The probe collects the reflected sound waves, which vary depending on the structure and density of the organ.
  • These reflections are sent to a computer, which processes the signals and generates clear images of the internal organs.

Application of Sonography:

  1. Identifies the causes of swelling, pain, and infections in internal organs.
  2. Evaluates heart conditions, monitors the heart after a heart attack, and detects abnormalities.
  3. Monitors the growth and health of a foetus during pregnancy.
  4. Assists in diagnosing conditions affecting the liver, kidneys, bladder, and other abdominal organs.
  5. Examines muscles, joints, and tendons for injuries or abnormalities.
  6. Detects blockages, cysts, and tumours in various parts of the body.
  7. It helps in guiding procedures like biopsies by providing real-time imaging.
  8. Monitors blood flow and detects vascular abnormalities.
